The FDA Gets It From Both Sides

No doubt I have been critical of the inability of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to adequately monitor and regulate what drugs get to market, allowing dangerous and defective medication to injure people. Now Gideon J. Sofer writes in the Wall Street Journal that "The FDA Is Killing Crohn’s Patients."

This struck a nerve with me. My father suffered from Crohn’s disease for many years before his death and currently one of my closest friends is suffering. I want a cure for all Crohn’s patients. What is the cost? How do we study the testing? What are the ethical considerations? Mr. Sofer is asking the right questions - who has the answers?

I agree. I also know friends with Chron's disease and it is a very debilitating illness.

It isn't just Crohn's disease where the FDA has killed people through the delay of new therapies. It has happened repeatedly, and is continuing to happen, with new cancer drugs and other therapies intended to treat serious and life threatening diseases. For many patients with debilitating and terminbal diseases, the risks posed by their disease far outweigh the risks posed by hughly promising and even proven new therapies that are trapped behind FDA's antiquated and slowing approval process.
