According to a recent CBS, 60 Minutes episode, a red wine resveratrol pill is coming to the market as an anti-aging pill. Resveratrol is a component found in red wine and is said to be a molecular mimic of a calorie restricted diet; a plan that has been shown to almost double the life span of all forms of life when caloric intake is cut in half. Giant Pharmaceutical Company, GlaxoSmithKline is wagering almost a billion dollars that a small start-up company developing a potent synthetic version of resveratrol will work.

In the mean-time Newsweek recently reported 4 more reasons to drink red wine (in moderation):

Please remember when it comes to any alcoholic intake–you must act responsibly. Too much of a good thing can be bad.

Resveratrol can help you to lead a long and healthy life so says many
doctors. Red wine alone does not supply enough resveratrol to achieve the
full range of benefits because one glass of red wine has only about
1mg of resveratrol and you need about 250mg/day. You need to take
high potency resveratrol supplements to achieve the results documented
in scientific studies.Resveratrol Supplements can also help you control
your weight naturally by increasing energy, reducing cravings, and limiting
your appetite.According to Wikipedia, Consumer Lab, an independent dietary
supplement and over the counter products evaluation organization,
published a report on 13 November 2007 on the popular resveratrol
supplements. The organization reported that there exists a wide range
in quality, dose, and price among the 13 resveratrol products
evaluated. The actual amount of resveratrol contained in the
different brands range from 2.2mg for Revatrol, which claimed to have
400mg of "Red Wine Grape Complex", to 500mg for Biotivia.com Transmax,
which is consistent with the amount claimed on the product's label.
Prices per 100mg of resveratrol ranged from less than $.30 for
products made by Biotivia.com, jarrow, and country life, to a high of
$45.27 for the Revatrol brand.

It seems like there are plenty of people out there making money on this issue, whether it be the pharmaceutical companies or internet business promoting resveratrol. I applaud the innovation of potentially life lengthening medical products, but hopefully the synthetic version will be as beneficial as the real thing without many, or any, side effects. Another thing to consider is this: if people start living longer, how will the medical community deal with the expanded life expectancies in terms of treatment and costs? As we age, we typically need more treatment and the treatment is usually costly. Something to ponder when considering the benefits of the new "fountain of youth" in pill form.

Be aware that Biotivia is planting false reports on the internet that their resveratrol product was used by a Harvard professor, that it was chosen the best product by ConsumerLab, and is a company that has been cited by the FDA, Better Business Bureau, and Wikipedia says it is a major source of spam. - Bill Sardi, LONGEVINEX

What I would be interested to know is the different comparison between Resveratrol and glutathione. Are the benefits the same? I understand that resveratrol creates or helps the body produce glutahione.
