According to a panel of drug experts, the use of powerful antipsychotic drugs to treat disorders in children is a dangerous practice. Risperdal, known as an “atypical” antipsychotic, had been used by doctors to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD). Nearly 400,000 children and teenagers have been treated with Risperdal in the past year.

Risperdal has not been approved for attention deficit conditions. The drug also has several dangerous side effects. In many cases, the patient’s metabolism may be affected, causing significant weight gain. Other patients develop muscular twitches, tics, or spasms, which can become permanent. Other drugs in the same class as Risperdal are Abilify, Geodon, Seroquel, and Zyprexa.

The panel was originally convened by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as part of a routine review procedure for Risperdal and Zyprexa. The FDA requested that the panel review and approve the agency’s oversight of the manufacturers and sign off on the agency’s efforts at warning against the risks involved with the drugs. The panel rejected the FDA’s proposed course of action and felt that stronger warnings were needed. The experts felt that the potential side effects were too dangerous to justify the risk in prescribing the drugs for attention disorders.

Lilly Zyprexa ' Chemical Straitjacket' Use by Children.

Zyprexa,as well as the other atypical antipsychotics, are being prescribed for children, even though this is an unapproved, off-label use. Eli Lilly has been charged in allegedly pushing the drug for children in more than one state.

A report by Dr. Cooper at Vanderbilt University states that 2.5 million children are now taking atypical antipsychotics. Over half are being given them for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Perhaps it is statistics like these that caused the FDA to finally require warnings on the labels of the ADHD drugs.

The use of atypical antipsychotics for children should be banned.

Many of the atypical antipsychotics have been on the market since the nineties. Originally approved for adults with schizophrenia and manic depression, 30,000 people or their families sued for Zyprexa alone - damages of death and diabetes predominately. Then the companies found a new target - seniors with dementia (off label use). There have been so many deaths from this a black box warning has been placed, if ignored. Now, the greed-driven makers have turned to children - predominately for "ADD" - a dubious diagnosis, and "pediatric bipolar disorder" - an unproven diagnosis.

These drugs must be banned for children, as children are our future.
