USDA Recalls 900,000 Pounds of Lean Cuisine Chicken Dinners

Nestle Prepared Foods Co., who distributes Lean Cuisine frozen meals, has recalled three types of frozen chicken dinners due to small chunks of blue plastic found in the chicken. The plastic has been found in the following Lean Cuisine meals: Café Classics Pesto Chicken with Bow Tie Pasta, Spa Cuisine Chicken Mediterranean, and Dinnertime Selects Chicken Tuscan, all of which were distributed nationwide and produced between August 18 and October 27, 2008. There have been several reports of consumers biting into the hard plastic and Nestle has reported one injury. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has labeled the recall as a Class I recall-- a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

The recalled dinners are:

1. 9.5-ounce packages of "LEAN CUISINE PESTO CHICKEN WITH BOW TIE PASTA". Printed on the side of each package is a production code of "8280595912," and a use-by date of "Best Before MAY 2010."

2. 10.5-ounce packages of "LEAN CUISINE CHICKEN MEDITERRANEAN". Printed on the side of each package is a production code of "8231595912" or "8241595912" and a use-by date of "Best before SEP 2010"; a production code of "8263595912," "8269595911," or "8274595912," and a use-by date of "Best before OCT 2010"; or a production code of "8291595912" or "8301595912" and a use-by date of "Best before NOV 2010."

3. 12.5-ounce packages of "LEAN CUISINE CHICKEN TUSCAN". Printed on the side of each package is a production code of "8234595911" and a use-by date of "Best before SEP 2009"; a production code of "8253595911" or "8269595912" and a use-by date of "Best before OCT 2009"; or a production code of "8292595911" or "8296595911" with a use-by date of "Best before NOV 2009."

Consumers with any of the above-mentioned meals in their freezer should return the package to the store it was purchased for a full refund. Questions should be directed to 1-800-227-6188.
