A tragic car accident that occurred in Alpine Township near Grand Rapids is a sobering reminder of the importance of seat belts. A car carrying a driver and two passengers lost control, struck several signs, and eventually rolled into the median. The individual in the rear seats was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car. The driver and the front passenger, who had been wearing seat belts, were removed from the vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries.

Seat belts play a crucial roll in keeping drivers and passengers safe in the event of an accident. For this reason, the State of Michigan has a number of laws and regulations dealing with the use of seat belts. Michigan recently enacted legislation that requires the use of seat belts by all front seat passengers. Children under 16 years of age must be restrained, regardless of their location in the vehicle. Law enforcement officers may pull over a driver solely for failure to comply with this law. Also, an individual who is injured in a car crash may be prevented from recovering up to 5% of their damages if failure to wear a seat belt contributed to their injuries.
