A Simi Valley, California man was awarded $21.1 million after his Land Rover Discovery sport utility vehicle rolled over on the freeway, leaving him with a debilitating spinal cord injury. The 53-year-old man was a former competitive floor hockey player, but is now paralyzed after his SUV succumbed to the much maligned roll over defect and rolled over several times, collapsing the roof as a result of a collision.

The L.A. County Superior Court judge based his decision on faulty vehicle design: a high center of gravity that lends itself to roll-overs and a roof that collapses too easily. Jaguar Land Rover denies responsibility, and claims the accident was not caused by faulty vehicle design. Instead, they place blame on the driver who sideswiped the man on the highway and plan to appeal the Court’s decision.
